  • Output settings for web upload (videos coming out dark on web)

Posted by Ryan Moyer on January 20, 2010 at 12:54 am

It would seem a lot of the video upload services out there (youtube, etc) make videos extremely dark when re-encoding them. I’m having a big problem with this as it’s causing some of my videos to lose a ton of detail, and/or become nearly unwatchable.

What settings should I be playing with to fix this? Should I be cranking up the brightness/contrast of my videos, or adjusting the color settings?

Make a brightness/contrast template to show the web-color in your preview window, use as preview FX. Remember to unhook before rendering.

Render one of the Media generator – Test, upload to web. Make the template so your preview correspond to the web video.

    Sorry for the dobblepost.

I have not experienced this at all with YouTube or Vimeo. I render my YouTube videos using the Sony AVC encoder with the “Internet 16:9 HD 30p” preset and they look exactly as I intended them.

Here is an example from YouTube:

Yeah mine looks fine on light scenes (which it looks like most of your video is), it’s dark scenes that are the real problem.

I am also using Sony AVC. Compare these two screenshots, which each have a section of my video side by side in vegas and in youtube.

When you say you’re using the Internet 16:9 HD 30p preset, where are you setting the preset?

Wow, those are some subtle blacks. I assume that YouTube is loosing them when it re-encodes. The Internet 16:9 HD 30p setting is in Vegas Pro 9.0. I see that you’re using the Movie Studio 9 version which is probably why you don’t have them.

What do you mean by subtle blacks, and is there something I can do to fix them so youtube doesn’t lose them?

Just that at first glance I thought both images were black. Then I looked really close at the before image and saw the details. I’m not sure what you can do about this.
