Output problems to resolve before screening
I have a few questions that hopefully you guys will be able to help me out with. I am fairly inexperienced so please bear with me.
I have a documentary shot on DV, edited in FCP5 in DV that will be shown in a cinema on 16 October.
All in SD. Some footage was shot progressive, some interlaced.I will be opening a FCP 5 project in to FCP 7 on a new iMAc i5 27″ tomorrow (previously been working on G5 Power Mac). I plan to convert my edit to Pro Res before colour correcting and final output.
In the cinema the projectionist will be playing the film from a Mac Book Pro and I will have a DVD back up.
Question 1: For the DVD (my back up plan) I plan to output to Compressor and burn the DVD in DVD Studio Pro. Am I taking the best path?
Question 2: What format should I render to be played from the hard disc?
I will be playing off a MacBook Pro connected to the digital projector.I have Magic Bullet Instant HD:
https://www.redgiantsoftware.com/products/all/magic-bullet-instant-hd/I thought it might be a good idea to resize my SD video using this software for the theatrical projection. Presumably I would output a finished cut in Pro Res format, import in to After FX and then apply this filter. What is the best format to save this final file in?
Question 3:
Please see this page I put up. Click on the images to enlarge:
https://houseshare2010.blogspot.com/I am experiencing bit-map like artifacts. All footage was shot SD PAL. The third image was shot interlaced but the other three (yellowish) images were shot progressive scan.
These images are taken from a DV file that I output. I’m not sure why this is happening. I output the DV from FCP to MPeg Streamclip Pro and saved progressive.
As I said before, some footage was shot progressive, some interlaced. I was advised not to use the FCP de-interlace filter because it is not very good. Should I be applying this filter on a clip by clip basis and leaving the progressive clips alone?Question 4:
Someone told me to use Magic Bullet frames to de-interlace as it gives much better results.
https://www.redgiantsoftware.com/products/all/magic-bullet-frames/I can use this in FCP 7 (updating to new iMac i5 27 tomorrow).
I am told de-interlacing costs you resolution – the last thing I want with this SD production.
Should I be de-interlacing at all? This will go to broadcast and again I’m told here not to de-interlace for a broadcast file. What worries me is, if I don’t de-interlace and burn the film to dvd, it looks horribly jittery (but does look a lot sharper, no doubt to keeping the resolution). What happens if you de-interlace progressive clips? Is this why there is bit mapping?
In a nutshell:
Lots of clips (74min doc). Some interlaced, some progressive. Do I convert to Pro Res to HD resolution or keep it at SD res? Do I use Magic Bullet Instant HD on a finished SD cut? When and where should I de-interlace.
Sorry for the confusing post, my head is scrambled right now and I am getting rather lost. I did trawl the other forum but couldn’t find answers to these questions; forgive me if I missed any solutions.
Any good advice is really appreciated.Cheers,
ADCADC
