    Hello All,

We recently switched to FCP from AVID and are having problems ouputing our first project. We’re running FCP 5.1.4 on a G5 w/ AJA KONA3 card connected to xsan.

    We’re finishing a 6 minute piece at 1080i 29.97 10 bit 4:2:2

First of all – the render seems to repeatedly be interrupted by an “out of memory” error. It needs to be nursed and babysat. An hour and a half render may need to be restarted at least 7 times to get through it. At the end I’m finding the render file to be missing portions of video tracks – things like captions and locators. Though an individual caption clip is present in the timeline – sometimes it is ignored in the render. Some locators snap off prematurely in the render file.

I used the render manager to blow away all render files associated with the project and re-rendered – but this didn’t solve the problem.

Also sometimes upon exiting and reopening the app the project can’t find the render files and they can’t be relocated. Then upon repeat open and closing they reappear.

Outputs are unreliable, unrepeatable, and dropping frames. I output the show three times and noted some inconsistencies:

at 00:59:58:00 in the timeline there is a 1 frame sync mark
1st output sync mark holds for 2:11 overwriting the first shot of the show
on the 2nd and 3rd outputs it comes in the right place but holds for 2 frames instead of one.

In the timeline there is a cut at 01:05:03:24
in the first output the cut comes at 01:05:03:28
    in the second at 01:05:04:06
    in the third at 01:05:03:26

Any ideas where to start? I need to get this project played out in the next two days.

I should have also stated that I’m using the edit to tape function – inserting. When I drag and drop over the insert box the project will play out with the problems listed previously. If i highlight a timeline in the browser and press the insert button I get a warning that it was expecting a different format and something about try nesting the timeline in another? Also if I try to use the mastering feature the deck roles – but no video is played out – and insert on the deck doesn’t seemed to be controlled by FCP

    Hi,
If I would be there I would that:
Open your project. Open a new project. Select and drag everything from the brownser of the old project to the new one. Save the new project.
I belive that the 90% of the problems in FC come from the very system and not from FC. So whenever I’ve got problems with FC I start making sure that my system is OK. So re-starting in “safe mode”, repairing permissions and running Diskwarrior or Techtools.
    Cheers,
    rafael

It would also be very helpful for trouble shooting if you would include information about your system, drives and decks.

    4x 2.5 GHz PowerPC G5
    3 GB DDR2 SDRAM
    OS X 10.4.9

    Jason,

I’ve tried to help you on this past, but its hard to remember what you’ve got in the way of a raid. And, what doies it test out at using the Koan speed test?
