  • OUTPUT LUT – Banding Issues During Playback

Posted by Craig Harris on March 18, 2012 at 2:52 am

    Having a serious issue.
When using an output LUT during playback, there is intermittent banding and flashing on the image.

    Project Specs:
    – Alexa ProRes
    – 23.98
    – LogC to Rec 709 LUT (Output LUT)
    – CDL grade on image

    System Specs:
    – iMac 27″ & MacBook Pro

    Version:
    – 8.2

Any ideas would be very helpful.

    kindly,
    Craig

I’d say system is rather limited.

I hear some people have similar flashing situation with imac.

Is it better without lut ? and with some uncompressed media ?

Are you talking about playback in the window in the GUI?

Why don’t you try to watch it on iPad.

Seriously you shouldn’t judge image using GUI screen. Only decklink video output on the 10 bit ( minimum) per channel video device-monitor-projector can be used to understand what kind of garbage do you have.

I am not not judging by the GUI… seriously.

Running thunderbolt out to an Ultra Studio 3D.

The output LUT is required as it is the base LUT for entire series. Any primary grades being made are passed on as CDL to lab where they will use same LUT to produce dailies etc.

NOTE: There is no banding when using the LUT as display, input or on a node.

No. The banding occurs in the reference monitor fed by an ultra studio.

This may sound a bit out of left field, but check the Filtering setting under Video Monitoring on the Config page. If it’s on anything other than Basic, try changing it to Basic and see if the problem persists. What you describe has been known to happen with Bilinear filtering. It’s a pretty obscure setting, and the issue is content dependent.

    Thanks Mike.
I cycled through all the settings but the result is the same.

    Something interesting though…
The footage plays back ok with output LUT applied UNTIL any of the lift / gamma / gain values are changed. As soon as one value is changed, the banding appears.

Again, this only happens when using the output LUT filed in the config page.

Well, as a hack you might want to try creating a track node and attaching the output LUT to it to see if you still have the same problem.

I wonder if you had the problem before and if it shows on other machines?
