Output HDV to camera?
Posted by Spencer Schilly on August 21, 2007 at 11:37 pmI am trying to output HDV my sequence onto a Canon XH G1/XH A1 via firewire. I am finding it impossible for the camera to recognize the image. I’ve read the manual and have played with the “SIGNAL SETUP” but am still not able to record my sequence back to tape. Does anyone know how to do this??

August 22, 2007 at 12:05 amwell on the “view” pulldown menu i was just trying to get an image to pop up on my LCD screen by selecting different settings which usually works with my deck (which I don’t haver right now) – i was just going to do a hard record…. also when i pull up the log and capture window it wont recognize the camera. it says “unable to intialize video deck” – the camera is on, in VCR mode and connected via firewire.

HDV doesn’t just play out firewire like DV douse. If you are going to be working in HDV you really need to understand the format. HDV uses a GOP structure, and because of this GOP structure it douse not play out firewire you must select print to tape and then wait for the long conforming process to finish before it will go back out.

August 22, 2007 at 9:29 amwell i need to get this sequence out of my computer… I’m in over my head at this point. The client needs it for air asap. They are going to TRANSFER my output to Digi-Beta for air…
Can someone please tell me the best way to get this out of my computer?? I have a mini DV deck and tried to output it the other day using print to tape because i thought it would be converted to DV and it wouldnt matter since digi-beta isnt HDV. Apparently it looked like shit – they said their were horizontal lines on the video and jagged edges on still images. I have no idea what happened. Should I just rent a HDV deck and print to tape? or can an do a quicktime export and then give it to their staff Avid editor and have him output it from Avid? That is the last resort.

August 22, 2007 at 1:06 pmHi….
I have a Sony camera and I found I had to change my settings for device control in Audio/Video settings to Sony Firewire. Have you tried the different settings there?
Also, here is a small article from Apple on Exporting HDV back to tape: https://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300775
Not sure if it will really be helpful, but who knows.

August 22, 2007 at 1:17 pmjust drop your sequence onto a DV timeline and then render it, you can then output that to your mini DV deck.
Like I said learn as much as you can about the HDV format if you plan on working with it.

August 22, 2007 at 2:18 pmThe camera may be looking for a DV input. Check it’s VCR settings to make sure it’s in HDV mode. Are you letting FCP conform the HDV then letting it play back in Print to Tape? it won’t just loop out of the firewire like Dv will.

August 22, 2007 at 4:25 pmwhen i do this what happens to the aspect ration? Do i need to letterbox it? or just do a 16:9 timeline? Also is HVD 23.98 or 29.97?
I will read up on this… i promise.
