what’s my best bet here: i have a client that wants to have the footage that i am working on put out to digibeta for broadcast. he just wants a quicktime of the file i am working on. then he will take it back home to a dub house to get it output. should i export as uncompressed or animation codec or what? i’m looking for max compatibility and quality. it’s less than 5 minutes long so size isn’t a huge concern. what’s the standard?

If he’s specified a QT movie, the only thing left is to decide the codec…most people consider animation and uncompressed the standards. It’s been a while since I compared, but if I recall correctly, animation renders faster and gives you a smaller file (still quite big since it’s a lossless codec). Personally, I use animation for graphics-only renders and uncompressed for those that include live video. I also recommend using AE’s embed project copy and link option to keep backups of .aep files within the rendered QT movie itself (you can later import such movies into AE as projects, if needed).

I agree with Dave. We use a mixture of Avid Codec or straight QT uncompressed codec, depending on the machine it’s coming from. It often gets downconverted to 2:1 anyway before it goes to air, either way it holds up exceptionally well, and I have found no compatibility issues with QT uncompressed codec in AVID or FCP.

You may want to be careful with field order rendering, though. It has sometimes proved prickly. AVID seems to sometimes see things back to front when it comes to field orders.
