Well, FYI, every codec has a different gamma, so when you compress into another codec, the results will be different than the original codec. If you stayed in the same codec, your gamma would remain the same.

Are you making web videos? or DVDs? what? Color correcting with a computer monitor is never recommended…unless you are compressing for the web.

Thank you for the reply, I am creating for the web. Do you know what the difference between the codec that Final Cut uses to bring in the footage is QuickTime’s gamma? If there is a standard difference then couldn’t I just compensate for it in Compressor’s settings?

[Benjamindaines] “Do you know what the difference between the codec that Final Cut uses to bring in the footage is QuickTime’s gamma?”

It uses the codec you chose when you chose your Easy Setup. If DV/NTSC, then DV/NTSC. IF HDV, then HDV, and so on. Then when you export it using compressor to say H.264, you have changed codecs. From DV/NTSC to H.264, and they have different gamma curves.

Shane is right. When you export with Compressor you can touch the gamma in the built-in gamma filter of Compressor. You got a very good preview to see the filter effect.

I’ve tried bumping the gamma in Compressor, but 1 the preview looks fine (matches FCP) and 2 the video still comes out very yellow.
