  • Output a HD 23.98 project to DV/NTSC Mini DV Tape ?

    Howdy Folks,

I am working on a short film that has gotten into a festival which requires delivery on a MiniDV tape. I am currently working on the finished project in a 23.98 HD 1920×1080 Animation timeline with sycn’d audio.

What is the best way to get to 29.97 ND DV/NTSC MiniDV tape?

    1) Should I Export an: Interlaced, Letterboxed, 4×3, 29.97 ND, Self Contained Quicktime with audio and then import and drop that into a 29.97 ND, 720×486 DV/NTSC Timeline and record that to tape?

    2) Or should the 2:3 pulldown be added automatically by FCP as I watch it record to tape from the 23.98 timeline? (The audio should still be in sync right?)

I do not have a AJA video card, just a newer G5 and I am recording to a mini DV camera.

Thanks and have a great 4th of July!
    Chris

Via a capture card, like AJA or Decklink. But you said you didn’t have that so you can’t do this:

This can only be done with a capture card. Your HD footage will not play out via firewire to a DV deck…only DV will.

Export a self contained file…DO NOT CONVERT IT YET…jsut export it. Then take that into Compressor and let Compressor compress to the DV codec…it is a preset in the advanced conversion section. Reimport that and see how that looks.

    Shane,

Thanks so much, I though I was missing a step. Just curious.. Why is it not a good idea to let FCP do the QT conversion from 23.98 to 29.97nd?

    Thanks!

    FCP doesn’t add the proper 2:3:3:2 or 2:3:2:3 pulldown…FCP adds 2:2:2:4 pulldown…and you can’t change this.

    Shane,

I don’t mean to be a wet blanket, but FCP 6.0.1 does output 2:3:2:3 via firewire to an NTSC dv device. I have not been able to get fcp to spit out advanced pull-down

    You do this by

    1)setting up a 23.98 sequence
    2) check the RT pop up window to 2:3:2:3
    3) check the System preference’s playback tab. There is a drop down for pull down
    4) Print to tape.

You can check this by make , 1 frame long, titles A, B, C, D repeating. when it prints to tape you will find that you will have a 2:3:2:3 pull down.

The fcp pdf manual covers this on page 1415 and elsewhere.

As for making a down conversion from HD to SD you really want to use a kona card. It does a MUCH better conversion than fcp does internally. You could also use Compressor to make the HD to SD down convert.

    Good luck,
