I’m using FCP 7. If I output as a Quicktime movie my dimensions are fine. But that produces files too big to upload to Youtube and I need the producer to see the work. Yet when I output using Quicktime conversion I can’t seem to find the correct dimensions. I’ve tried several different ones and while they each do it a little differently they’re all producing a movie that’s smushed. It’s either not wide enough or too high. Is there a specific dimension I should be using? The film is 960×720 in my sequence settings and that’s not an output option.

You really should be using Compressor for this, but if you are intent on using Quicktime Conversion and you don’t want to create a squeezed file, your output needs to forced to 1280×720 with square pixels

Thanks. I’ve never used Compressor, but it sounds like what I’d want to produce smaller files.

I have one simple rule when doing this for approval – output as Apple TV using QT conversion in FCP. It’s hellishly quick, produces 720p video at a good file size (around 25-30Mb/minute) and the results look good in Youtube and Vimeo (as well as importing quickly to those services).
You might want to change the file extension afterwards from m4v to mov if you’re sending them to a client. The m4v extension tells a computer to import it to iTunes.
