Outlining, drop-shadowing clip within-a-clip
Posted by John Mendelsohn on September 6, 2011 at 9:57 amIs it possible to put a dedicated border around a clip within a clip? To add a drop shadow? Also, while I’m here, it seems impossible to feather crop, as in earlier versions of the software. Someone, please, say it ain’t so!

September 6, 2011 at 12:56 pmHave you looked at the many “filters” developed by Brendan Gibbons, Simon Ubsdell, Alex Gollner have done ? Are you familiar with Rigging and Publishing in Motion 5 to FCPX? If it’s not there it can either be made or it’s already been done.

September 6, 2011 at 1:56 pmMany thanks for your kind reply, sir. I am unaware of the filters you cite. Where may I find them? I’m honestly incredulous that feathering and drop-shadowing aren’t be built into the app!

September 6, 2011 at 2:22 pmHi John
As Craig says quite a few people have addressed this with Motion templates – here’s one of mine that has lots of controls that should do pretty much everything you need.

September 6, 2011 at 2:29 pmVery enormous thanks, sir. Now, to appear a complete waste of space, how do I make this available to the application?

September 6, 2011 at 2:37 pmDownload the file and unzip it.
Navigate to your User/Movies/Motion Templates/Effects folder. Make a new folder called TKY Effects and drop the downloaded file into it. It should now appear within the FCPX Effects menu. Note that if you are running Lion you will need to relauch FCPX before it appears.

September 6, 2011 at 4:48 pmMuch obliged, sir. I must admit that I’m unclear as to how to make these visible to the application, though. Please advise.

September 6, 2011 at 5:08 pmMany, many thanks, Craig. I’ve surmised that I need to put these in my Motion Templates folder. My question is: Do I put the whole folder in, for instance, Transitions?

September 6, 2011 at 5:38 pmPut the whole folder on, e.g. in the case of the example I gave you put in the unzipped folder which will be called Adjustable Frame V3. As I said before put it on your User/Movies/Motion Templates/Effects folder (preferably make a new folder inside that called TKY Effects to differentiate it from the built-in ones but this is not strictly necessary).
When installing 3rd party “effects”, make sure you put Effects/Transitions/Generators in the appropriate folders.
