Out of Memory??
Posted by Angela Boyd on May 17, 2005 at 2:43 pmI am working in FCP 4.5 HD…..Worked all night on a project with no problems. This morning when I launched the project I can not ge my timeline to show. I doubled clicked on the sequence in my bin and it gives me a message that says error: out of memory. This can not be…I am working with an external drive that has 180 gigs of free space left on it. all of my scratch diskes, autosaves, render files and everything are set to this drive…I tried going to my windo menu and timeline is not an option. Is there something I did wrong?? I was just working with this project 10 hours ago with no memery problems..and I have plenty of space..and suggestions???? Thanks

May 17, 2005 at 2:58 pmMemory is not hard drive space. How much RAM do you have?
You can change the amount of memory that FCP will use in your preferences. Have you tried increasing it?

May 17, 2005 at 3:25 pmYeah…I knew that….I am in denial. I am really upset that my brand new G5 2.5…only came standard with 512 ram. It’s quite upsetting considering how much mone I’ve already spent on the system, monitors, deck, programs etc.. I need to purchase more ram for sure, but as for now…my setting ar as follows. Application 100% (350MB) Still cache 10% (20MB) Thumbnail cache Disk: 8192K Ram 512K can I change any od this for the time being while I wait for more ram…..I tried changing the Still Cache to 100% and got the same out of memory message…..anything I can do?? Thanks gor your help…I’ve been working with these settings for a few months now and no problems….am I at the end???

May 17, 2005 at 3:32 pmIf your project is effects-heavy, perhaps you could try making a cuts-only version until more RAM arrives. I’d make your order a RUSH!
(I was happy with crucial.com — had my new RAM in two days). – Rob

May 17, 2005 at 3:41 pmI’m not sure – shut down, restart, and make a clean install of FCP perhaps?
I’m still a fairly new user, hopefully someone with more experience will respond to you. Good luck, Angela!
Haven’t heard of ramseeker, but i’ve seen crucial recommended on here before.

May 17, 2005 at 6:53 pmAn “out of memory” error can be due to a corrupt file, not a lack of RAM. I’ve seen it with a program with a lot of PSD files or PSD files that have FCP effects or filters on individual layers. If anyone comes across that you can try deleting your PSD files first to see if your sequence will open. Try deleting render files too. Hope that helps…

May 17, 2005 at 9:05 pmAn “out of memory” error is usually is due to a corrupt file, not a lack of RAM. I would get at least another GB of RAM though… at crucial.com that will cost about $116 for (2) 512 sticks. Alot of people here recommend the site & are happy with them. I would tweak your memory settings to no more than an Application cache of 95% & a Still cache of 30%. This will leave your background services/system free to use some RAM should it need it. The Still cache usually doesn’t get bumped up untill you notice that your timeline is taking a longtime to load the thumbnails for previewing. I use this feature more intensively than most (lots of cuts with different files) & haven’t had an issue with the 30% setting.
