Out of Memory messages and FCP crashes…what’s the problem?
Hello All,
I am editing a a large documentary project shot on the 5D. I’ve converted all my footage to ProRes422LT.
Editing using FCP 7.0
My old IMac is on the fritz so I am switching over to my Macbook Pro 4GB RAM NVIDI GeForce GT 330M 256MB GDDR3.
A few questions:
1-Should I upgrade to 8GB RAM
2-I am having recurring messages saying “Error: Out of Memory” if I leave the project for a while. It seems I may need to convert some JPEGs in the project to TIFF
3-FCP is crashing on me. Occasionally I will get a diagnostic message, other times not.
4-Can my graphics card run a second monitor?So far, I’ve wasted time and money trying work arounds and at this point I need a stable solution.
Your advice and help is greatly appreciated.

More RAM won’t help much, as FCP 7 can’t use more than 4GB, to my knowledge. It’s not actually a 64-bit application. What’s the processor speed on your Macbook – that’s more important. How many still images are you working with? I think TIFF would take MORE memory to process, not less. FCP crashes for a lot of reasons – I can’t really troubleshoot it without more information. When does it crash? What’s the error message? How big is the FCP project file? How long are you clips, on average?

I’m working on a 2.53 GHz Intel Core i5 and my FCP project file is 8.2 MB.
So far, I’ve encountered 2 problems. The first is that I will get an error message when I walk away from the system. It simply says Error: Out of Memory, but normally doesn’t cause a crash. From the poking around I’ve done on this forum, other people seem to be experiencing the same issue and there is no agreement about what might be causing it.
The second more serious problem, is that I’ve had several problems with FCP crashing on start-up or soon after. I have been much more diligent about saving a new project file each time I go to work on it, and also have been checking my directories and permissions. I don’t have a current copy of the crash report, but from what I can glean on the forum, other people who have had this problem have often had to completely wipe their computers and re-install everything.
Other specs. I am editing of a 1TB LaCie d2 Quadra 7200RPM HD and am backing up on another HD (same specs)
Not sure what to do from here, but these on again off again moments are really making it hard to do the creative work.
