“out of memory” in 5.1.4

Hi,
I am editing a project with HDV 1080i footage on a pre-Intel PowerBook in FCP 5.1.4. When I click on the clips, I get an “out of memory” error message– the Viewer shows only a red background and the “out of memory” message. The PowerBook has 4 free gigs. I realize this is not a huge amount of headroom, but seems like it should be enough to open a clip.

Also, even tho the Sequence matches the clips, when the clips go on the timeline, they need to be rendered. Could this possibly be because I don’t have all the components of the HVX transfer? We sort of forced the import of the clips from HVX, despite error messages saying that I needed certain other components. I wasn’t able to get these components from the Sony website, thus the forcing– erm, “workaround.”

Try searching this forum first for ‘out of memory’. It is a common error message and it can be caused by lots of things, typically stills sizes and type, filters etc. FCP can’t utlise more than 4 gigs anyway so it is not necessarily hardware.

Try saving the project with a new name.
That used to work with FC 5.

Whilst there have been improvements, FCP still does this in version 7…. I think I can speak for everyone when I hope for big things around February time next year….

I am seeing some of the other posts with this problem.
So, it looks like- Even if I purchase a new iMac & a FCP upgrade, this problem may remain?

Getting the latest versions of FCP and a better computer will deal with a lot of issues, because obviously that’s simply what upgrades do, and I noticed a dramatic decrease in issues even with the latest upgrade, but no it wont completely eradicate issues.
