Thanks for taking time to relay this info Darby, this makes sense.

On this project, there’s a text layer FULL of 14 pt numbers with a scaling random 3D per char. generator, which takes some crunching. Is there a way to essentially “bake” this (like lighting in 3D) so it’s not so processor intensive while working on the project? It sounds doubtful this would help with the render though…

    Cheers,
    ~Chris

It is my understanding that vector graphics such as text require quite a bit of processing, but I’m not sure how much RAM they actually require.

One suggestion would be to pre-compose a smaller text layer with your random text and bring that pre-comp into your final composition multiple times. It’s unlikely that anyone would notice that the text is repeated if you balance the number of instances of the nested composition with the amount of text in the composition. You could also use time remapping to slightly offset the animations in each instance of the composition.

To maintain the quality and 3D characteristics of your text in your main comp you’ll need to enable collapse transformations on the nested compositions, and then you may not actually be saving any render time/resources… I’m not entirely clear on how AE works with multiple instances of a nested comp with collapse transformations enabled.

So it’s kind of a crap shoot, but perhaps it will help.
