out of focus video- fixes in post?

I tried following your steps earlier, but I couldn’t fins any changes in the image. Do you use the Four Point Matte or the Eight Point Matte?

Depending on how out of focus the shot is, another work-around would be to make sure just the eyes are in focus.

You can do that by duplicating the video layer, crop/feather the top layer to surround the eyes, and then sharpen the top layer. Leave the bottom layer as is.

It’s not perfect, but it’s not as hideous as sharpening the whole image.
