    Hi,
Is there a simple way to make a blur gradient on my compo to fake it smoothly going out of focus without using a 3d camera? I tried using an ajustment layer+blur. When I mask it, it makes the transition transparent , not less blury. I want to use it to fake parts of a 2d compo going out of focus and the objects shadow diffusing as it drops further from the light source.
    Thank you.

lens blur and compound blur will both let you define another layer as a blur map (lens blur calls it depth map, compound blur calls it a blur layer).

lens blur is probably the one that i would go with if you wanted to do a rack focus like effect… as you animate the focal distance in the effect, it will change the focus based on the grey levels of the depth map layer. it’s also easier to make tweaks in the ‘focus’ as you are working with it.
