If I Export a sequence into QT to then take into compressor(Thanks David). What are the best QT settings from the FCP timeline? I will then use best encode in compressor for DVD.

Is that the color red you want to use?

    From your timeline:

Export > Quicktime Movie > Current Settings

Use Export/Quicktime Movie as opposed to Export/via Quicktime Conversion. The best settings are the settings used by your sequence–in other words, select “Use Current Settings.”

Then you may choose to “Make Movie Self-Contained” or not. Selecting this will make a new movie based on a copy (?) of the media for your sequence but does not result in another generation of compression. If you do not select this, your movie will simply be a pointer which references the media existing on your scratch disks. The only problem with that “reference movie” is that sometimes media gets moved and then the reference movie will error out when it tries to play. It’s your choice…reference movies save time and drive space. Self-contained movies are completely portable.

Do not select Recompress All Frames.

Oh, and remember to Export All Markers, as David reminds us. By the way, I have found that judicious use of Compression Markers in a sequence can improve encodes, but this relates more to Web video than DVD.

Direct the resulting movie to a folder of your choice and you’re ready to go to Compressor. Meanwhile, FCP won’t be tied up during a long encode. Hope that’s not too much info. Hey, I’m taking lunch, so there it is.

Thanks guys. I’ve got that part down. WHat I was wondering if it made a better encode if at the time of choosing use current settings,,, I chose a better codec if I had a lesser setting on my timeline? Or, is that something you change your settings of your sequence and then media manager or re-render the timeline and then do your export?

Is that the color red you want to use?

The best export is the exact same setting as your timeline as I said in my first post. Anything else adds additional conversion and compression.

[hdfilmmaker] “ok, when do you up an upres of a seq?”

    I don’t honestly know what you’re asking.

For making a DVD, the cleanest export from FCP is staying the same format as your timeline.

Are you asking about posts advising people who are editing video with the DV codec, where myself and others often advise them to finish uisng 8 or 10-bit uncompressed in order to preserve the quality of their graphics and text?

I’ve had the opposite request from a client. I edited a program as 8 bit un-compressed. The client wanted to author themselves so they asked me for a DV quicktime. Now of course they are complaining because the graphics are jagged. I told them it’s a result of compressing the file to DV. Is that correct?

    Yep.

They didn’t need you to downconvert the sequence if they have Apple Quicktime.
