Got a few of these but we populated them with drives from a dead GTECH FC XL RAID I think 7200RPM 1.5TB.

Does the job not as fast as I wanted but works.

I use a Promise R4 8 TB. It’s OK but not as fast as I wish. As far as the 12TB version, my concern would be the fact that it is populated with 3 TB hard drives. See this article for more info on the reliability of 3 TB drives:

My daily driver is the Areca 8050T2:

Loaded it with 2TB HGST drives and formatted RAID6. The fan is a tad louder than I’d like, but speed and data integrity have been great.

I would use an R6 – more Speed, more Safe, more value.
We are using this unit since 3 years with zero issues. Speed is 700mb/sec floor

I use GTECH RAIDs and have not had any issues with the portables, SAS and recent Thunderbolt2 offerings.
However we did kill a two FC XL units but the other two are still going strong after 6 years. Those are Fibre units though.
