November 27, 2005 at 5:58 amThe short answer is it depends upon which software package you are talking about and how the system is configured. You might want to check out http://www.barefeats.com. They have spent alot of time benchmarking all the different G5s. From what I remembered the new 2.3s were about the speed of the previous 2.5s.

November 27, 2005 at 12:56 pmDual 2.7 is still a faster machine from clock speed.
The second question is are you prepared to buy all new hardware for the dual core machine? If not, then the 2.7 is your answer.

November 27, 2005 at 1:12 pmInteresting note on the barefeats site about the new Quad macs. If that bears out with more testing it takes some of the shine off the Quad. If the initial reports are true then hopefully Apple will release an update for the pro apps to make them aware of all 4 processors. But it does make that dual 2.7 you are talking about look better Walter.

November 27, 2005 at 5:13 pmThanks guys, I was thinking of a second Mac for Audio work and smaller video projects…or replacing my current Dual 2.0 G5 with something like the Dual 2.7 and use my Dual 2 for audio. I’m leaning towards the 2.7 and using the 2.0 for audio.
Thanks again,
