OT – proper stupid question relating to stereoscopic
long day – I can’t figure out the google query for this, as in I can’t seem to quietly find an answer –
does anyone know if, when you’re making a stereoscopic cut offline as 2D, to master online full 3d monty, whether you can clip scale push in on the material? I’m doing little push ins, everything is going to be remastered from source for final on pablo or something – has anyone come across this?
goes to left right folder file source red stereo and interleaved 50i stereo hdcam SR.can you just get away with indicating geometric push ins on the footage, or is that actually a no-no?
does stereoscopic actually allow for little push ins on the master online?answers, grateful postcard. I’ll try some other cow forums here too. am looking not to lay an egg as it were.

I have never actually tried major repositioning, you can push in a little, but it’s usually done for correcting misaligned vertical. If the footage was shot flat with no convergence you can probably push in a bit. But if they converged the lenses, then I bet it would be problematic.
Do you have a 3D monitor? I have a cheap HP 23″ 3D LED that I use. I cut in FCPX using HSBS pairs. It really helps me spot sloppy 3D shots that I can either try to avoid or flag for fixing later. The new Teranex and The Foundry’s solutions do a decent job of fixing minor issues, but they are never as good as if it works out of the cameras.
Sadly I am out of town for the next ten days or I’d jump at testing this out. You could test it out with anaglyph glasses yourself using the demo of the Dashwood tools. There are so many Nuke level capabilities in there you would be able to get your head around if it’s acceptable.
I would love to know what you find out.

when I say I know little about stereoscopic, I’m being generous – there’s actually a Pablo downstairs apparently, but the plan is for all this to be conformed and onlined stereoscopic elsewhere – no 3D monitor for me. I’m basically cutting 2D with the left eye red and de-interlaced 50i.
the push ins are dead slow creep-ins on 5-7 second long 200fps slomo 3D stuff? I think I’ll maybe keep them in and the guys at the other place can break the news if they don’t work…

It’s certainly done to correct for edge violations and such, bit as mentioned, depending on convergence, you would need to control that. I haven’t used FCP or FCPx for stereo 3D editing, but in other tools and perhaps the plug-in, the convergence may be properly controlled and applied to both eyes.
