  • OT – New question on audio recorder

(I figured a new thread might attract attention from you helpful folks — Gary, Wayne and Frederick — who responded to my audio recorder question, below.)

With regard to the minidisk recorders and the Marantz compactflash recorder, do they have the capability of recording index marks on the fly during a recording? When I’m using DAT, I can insert index marks at will during a VO recording, which later allows me to go directly to the good takes for importing that audio into the edit system. It looks as thought the Marantz has that but I haven’t found that function on the minidisk recorders yet.

Also, is importing 44.1/48.0 audio from the minidisk units into the edit system a slow process? My cursory research indicates that you have to first import to some proprietary Sony software n the PC and then export as .wav files. Sounds like a bit of a hassle…or am I reading too much into that?

    Thanks again.

With MiniDiscs, you can add tracks as you record. You have to transfer the audio in real time via analog.

    Hi Lee,

My iRiver can record audio as MP3, OGG, WMA, ASF or WAV files. The bit rate can be set for MP3’s (from 40Kbps to 320 Kbps). It does have automatic gain control but this can be over-ridden. If you wished you could monitor the levels in real time via the head-phones but for me this is impossible as the iRiver is usually in the groom’s pocket (I do a lot of weddings) and I am always monitoring the levels my camera is picking up anyway.

I have always recorded in MP3 as a contiguous file but I don’t think there is any way to index this file.

Once I get back to my edit PC I simply plug my H120 into a USB (USB2) port where it is then recognised as another hard drive, so all transfers are drag-and-drop via Windows Explorer – a huge plus!

I can then drop this file straight onto the Vegas time line and edit from there. Of course you could always open the file in a dedicated sound editor, tweak it there to your heart’s content and then bring it into Vegas.

Have a look here for more information on the H100 series. https://www.iriveramerica.com/support/hd/h100.aspx

I use an HHB MD500 and it allows markers.. and transfers digital through usb port to computer, very durable, intuitive, with reasonable media costs.

It also has SPDIF i.o. through TOSlink

Ditto John’s experience, this is a great deck.
Realtime transfers are sometimes a hassle, it’s true.
Recordings are great, functional design of the MDP500 is great, and it’s a unique color!

Oh yes, I was writing to say that digital transfers come across s/pdif as wav files. I record directly into sound forge or sometimes vegas. Although you are going through the steps of “recording”, what’s actually happening is a 1s and 0s realtime file transfer, same function as when you capture DV tape.
