  • OT: Looking for an electronic version of US map

    Hi,

    For a small home project, I am looking for a complete US map with interstates (preferably light colored map) of good size.

    I want to show the whole map than zoom in to one of the state to show the start of a road trip and then draw the line showing where all we went over the map.

    I know it can be done in AE but I don’t have the background i.e. the map. I will appreciate if anyone over here has a link to any online map available or if anyone has a copy of a map he/she is willing to share.

    Again this is a home project and not a commercial project so I am looking for something that’s freely available.

    Thanks
    -Amit

    well – not sure if it’s what you want – but just check out maps.google.com – pretty amazing. Turn on satelite and hybrid for an extra treat. May help for screenshots or research. Also – MSN has their virtual world as well.

    Hope that helps!

    @jayse

    Thanks for looking into this post. That’s no help to me. I even tried searching google but could not find a decent US map. Most of the maps are either too small in size or they don’t have the major US interstates shown. Maps available at google, mapquest, yahoo etc are in small size.

    As I said, I wanted a US map in which I can then zoom in to show where I started the journey and where all we stoped.

    Here’s what I have in mind. I am looking for a map say 2000 x 2000 pixels in dimensions. I will initially show a zoomed out version of the map to fit on the 720 x 480 view port. Then I start to zoom in as well as pan, as needed, so that I can show the 100% map view of the starting point. From there the map is always shown at 100% but I keep panning the map by drawing a line over the map to show that we are travelling and what interstate we are taking…

    Hope, I am clear this time.

    I had to do something like this once…I found that I had to take a low res map and recreate it in something like Illustrator or some other vector graphics program. then resize it so I could zoom in and out…long process but the results were quite nice and you don’t have to pay any royalties for the map…

    Good Luck

    Absolutely.
    Something like a US flag should be easy to recreate in illustrator rather
    than looking all over for one already made.
