I might be posting in the wrong spot, but here goes…

I recently acquired a Lacie 2tb D2 Quadra drive. I currently have it set up in fast mode. If I have it connected to my 15″ Macbook Pro via eSATA can I use the drive, FW800 port, as a pass through for my camera? I am shooting HDV and do not have a Kona or Matrox or anything like that.

I am going FW400 and passing through another drive but wondering if this is my best option.

    John,
I don’t know the answer to that question, but I believe the answer would be no. I think the e-sata and firewire protocols are different enough to prohibit this. Plus even if it did work you would be dragging the speed of the E-sata bus down to Firewire 400 speeds. Since you have the LaCie on the E-Sata bus, I’m assuming through a LaCie Express 34 card why not use the Firewire 800 port that is on the Laptop. It’s easy to get a cable or converter to go from the Firewire 800 port to either a 6 pin or 4 pin 400 port.

I’ve never tried but I think the same than Don.
If you are connected by e-SATA, the FW ports shouldn’t be active.

You guys are right. Once you use eSATA, that overrides everything else on the drive. I did end up using the FW port on the computer but was concerned because it was a pretty slow conversion. However, once I began editing I was able to see a big boost in efficiency.

Thanks for taking the time to respond to my simple question. I appreciate it.
