July 10, 2009 at 10:42 pm[Phil Balsdon] “By the look of the sample it has all been done , including the video c/k, using Flash.
The background is too clean to have been done in an NLE and then exported as FLV”I understand that Flash is a format that support Alpha but is not an application where you can create the Alpha channel. I think that you will always need something like FC, AE or so to do the CK, rotoscoping or whatever.

July 11, 2009 at 12:06 am[Greg Ball] “Do we just assume that they have a web person who can handle a flash file with Alphas? How would the titles be done? “
hey greg,
think of it like any file with an alpha, some apps see it some don’t.the Adobe apps that see alpha channels usually accept them by default, so there should not be much of an issue beyond knowledge of the web guy and a version of the flash.

July 11, 2009 at 1:40 pmYes, I think you might be misunderstanding me. You shoot the video on green. You do the key and you export the actor to flash with an alpha. It is here where the workflow can differ. You can take that actor in to Flash and design all those elements in Flash and make the website. This will produce the cleanest looking material. You can also pre-render all of the elements together and add only the small amount of interactive stuff that is needed (such as the navigation/buttons). You will need a Flash web designer/programmer no matter what.

July 11, 2009 at 3:55 pmIt is most likely that all the web folks will want is the talking head video with alpha. Putting the background into the video would add a lot of overhead that would require a higher data rate. It’s much better to add background & titles with Flash. But, by all means, ask them. Also be sure to ask them what data rate they want.

July 11, 2009 at 10:37 pmJeremy is correct. You need to remove the green or blue background and export a video with an Alpha channel using something like AE. Since Flash 8 this could be a Quicktime Animation codec or flv. This is all the Flash programmer needs as Flash will recognize the alpha channel. The rest of the animation is done in Flash.
For web only use this creates a smaller and cleaner end result and the reason the background animation is so clean in Greg’s original example.
Now try explaining to a client if they want the kind of quality they have seen on the internet for their web site and then want a video for use elsewhere they need to go through two different post production processes.
