We did a shoot on DVCPRO 50 using Panasonic AJ-P66MP tapes. One of the recorded cassettes now will simply not load into a VCR. When loaded it goes in, sits for a moment and then is unceremoniously ejected. No jamming, no error messages, no loose tape spilling out — just no playback. Before I take the frightening step of opening the cassette myself and trying to repair it — does anyone know of a service that will do this and actually has some expertise with this kind of operation.

In L.A. Lightning Media does this and also in other cities- most large dub houses probably do it as well.

    Hi,

On the undersde of the cassette, there are “locks” for the yellow lid. Release those and look at the tape. Does it look okay? It may be that the tape has snapped and there is not tape there. It will be apparent.

Second, if the tape is there, see if you can advance the cassette hubs. This will take two people. You don’t have enough fingers to keep the tape lid up and the tape lock open and advance the hubs. If it advances, move it forward to see if the hubs are locked for some reason, or the tape is jammed.

In all it sounds like you will need to repair the cassette, but I would not do this if you are not tuned into it. Call around to some of theduplication facilities, they may have had a problem in the past with a tape, but it is pretty rare. I mean I wouldn’t go there and I work for the company. Find someone who has done it before.

    Good Luck,

    jan

Thanks to everyone for their help. It turned out the tape door wouldn’t open becuase there was a tiny piece of plastic jamming it closed. All’s well that ends well . Thanks again.
