OT: Getting .mov thumbnails to show in Explorer

None that I know of in Windows. Quicktime is not a native format to Windows and so Windows Explorer hasn’t a clue what to do with it.

Of course, the Vegas Pro Media Manager will show you thumbnails for your Quicktime files so just catalog the files with the media manager and you’re good to go.

Here’s a workaround (using my favourite app, IrfanView) I found on another Vegas forum.

In Vegas, click Import Media, open the folder where the .mov files are, the window will show the files represented by the standard Quicktime icon with file names under it.

Launch IrFanView in a secondary monitor, select File -> Thumbnails, then select the folder that contains the .mov files. Thumbnails of the files will be generated within IrFanView.

Now one can look at the thumbnails in IrFanView, note the file names, and in Vegas select the files that are needed to import into Project Media bin.

I just installed “FastPictureViewerCodecPack” to get my DSLR RAW images to appear in Windows Picture Viewer, and it also gives me thumbnails in Explorer.

In addition, the codec pack works, so far, with every image and video file format on my hard disk.

I just installed “FastPictureViewerCodecPack” to get my DSLR RAW images to appear in Windows Picture Viewer, and it also gives me thumbnails in Explorer.

It seemed like a great idea, and the price was right. I downloaded and installed the codec pack, and just went with the defaults. However, .mov files are still showing up as the default Q icon in Windows Explorer.

It is a fresh install. I left the ‘always show icons’ option in Windows Explorer un-checked.

Ideas?

What can I say – it works here. Your view does have to be medium or large icons.
Also, I only have Quicken installed as Vegas sometimes needs it, otherwise VLC is my default player for everything media.

I see that you have a separate disk on the VASST Vegas tutorials about Media Manager. I am working my way through the VASST Vegas tutorials (slowly), but I am not there yet.

Is it simple to catalogue the .mov files in Media Manager? Or should I just use Mike’s IrfanView workaround for now, and then wait on Media Manager until I get time to go through the tutorial?

Hi Steve.

I should have read your post more carefully. I apologize. I wrote to the good people at FastPictureViewer and their Codec Pack works with DSLR RAW photos, but it does not work with .mov. It is OK, because I am sure I will appreciate it when I get into RAW photos (and for $9.95, how can you go wrong?).

I have a question though: qre you getting thumbnails on your .mov’s in Windows Explorer, or in VLC?

I get thumbnails on my .avi’s in Windows Explorer just fine, and was wondering if it would be a big mistake to try to change the wrapper from .mov to .avi with some kind of transcoder (perhaps Cineform NeoScene?). Would that be a mistake?

Well, I don’t really know how mine works…. I really never noticed the mov thumbnails in my Explorer windows before installing the raw codecs, but, then, I rarely encounter mov files.

I wonder if that VLC is my default viewer for everything has anything to do with it? Could Explorer be looking to the default program for the mov filetypes icon? Quicktime in your case and VLC in mine? When I add a mov file to an explorer window, the VLC “cone” is displayed for a couple of seconds, then it’s replaced with the first frame of the video.

Quicktime is evil. I wouldn’t even have it on my system except for those times that I do need it for Vegas. I *do not* let Apple automatically update anything on my system – it seems that every time there is a new release from Apple, there’s a bunch of people who can’t get mov files into their Vegas projects again.

But, that’s a tangent – I really recommend VLC.
