OT: Garage Band export as .aiff?
Posted by Tom Matthies on July 2, 2007 at 3:09 pmI made a quick little music bed in Garage Band for use under a credit roll and I’d like to export it as a .aiff file. The only option I seem to have is to export ti iTunes whish I assume will produce an .aac file.
Is it possible to export a .aiff directly?

July 2, 2007 at 4:01 pmOK, a bit convoluted but:
Open iTunes. Change Import preference to .aiff. Export to iTunes from garage band. Reimport resulting iTunes file into Quicktime Pro. Export as .aiff at 48k.
It works but there’s gotta be an easier way…?

July 2, 2007 at 4:03 pmI usually set the export to the highest quality AAC and then convert that to AIFF. That’s always been good enough for my purposes. You should test it and see if you can hear any difference between the project and that kind of export.
If that still doesn’t feel good to you then I would suggest buying either:
($16) Audio Hijack:
https://rogueamoeba.com/audiohijack/or
($32) Audio Hijack Pro:
https://rogueamoeba.com/audiohijackpro/Both will let you record any Mac application’s audio output directly to AIFF before it exits the computer. The regular version will do that for you but I included the Pro one in case you decide it does something else you want.

Open iTunes. Preferences/Advanced/Importing, set “Import Using..” to AIFF.
Use the “Custom” button to select 48kHz sample rate.
Drop GarageBand file into iTunes library window or use Add to Library (CMD-O).
Select the new track, go to menubar-Advanced/Convert Selection to AIFF.
The converted track will show up in your Library list under the original one.
Drag it to your desktop (which makes a new copy of the file), or, select it and use “get info>show in Finder” to get to the file in its iTunes folder. -

July 2, 2007 at 7:39 pmFrom the share menu select export song to disk. Then simply open that that file in quicktime and export as an aiff.
