    Hi,

I’ve searched all over and I can’t find what I’m looking for:

    Performance comparison between a G5 Dual 2.0 vs. Quad and/or Octo-Core Mac Pro’s.

I’m sure these tests have been done, I just cant find ’em.

I urgently need this info to motivate an upgrade purchase.

Thanks in advance for your help.

    [Wayne K 123.] “Performance comparison between a G5 Dual 2.0 vs. Quad and/or Octo-Core Mac Pro’s.”

Dude, there’s no comparison between a Dual 2.0 G5 and a Mac Pro Quad or Octo-Core.

We still have a Dual 2.0 in our third suite and both the G5 Quad 2.5 and the Mac Pro Quad 3.0 run rings around that machine in both rendering and Compressor operation. Compressing a file for DVD probably is 75 to 100% slower (or more) on the G5 Dual, especially if you’re taking an HD timeline and compressing it for an SD DVD.

The G5 Quad 2.5 and the Mac Pro Quad 3.0 are actually very evenly matched.

As for Octo vs. Quad, just remember you need to beef up the RAM and Graphics card in whatever you purchase. I always say purchase the most system you can afford at the time of purchase.

    Ding, Ding, Ding!

    There’s the magic answer!

I can vouch for Walter on everything. We have a Mac Pro Quad 3.0 and a G5 Dual 2.7. And the Mac Pro runs circles around the G5 when you are taking rendering speeds.

One word of caution… Memory is the key to a Mac Pro. Getting the right memory and installing it correctly if the key to top performance. Oh yeah… And nothing less than an ATI X1900XT video card, please.

Comming off a G5 Dual 2.0 to a octo-core 3.0 the most significant speed increase I’ve noticed is a 2 or 3 time increase in the compressing time through compresser. My dual was painfully slow and made me dread having to compress anything longer than a 5 min peice. Now Now it’s much faster. Also. AE will see a significant render boost as well. Haven’t really noticed if FCP renders faster though. Also I can now run motion without getting a damn warning evertime i exceede a graphics limit. Gotta at least get a ATI X1900XT, and ram that machine up. I agree with walter. Buy whatever you can afford now b/c then you’ll more than likely be able to last on that machine longer. If you buy something middle of the road now, you’ll feel like you need to upgrade it much sooner.

But if you still want to see some comparisons, go to:

I think you can get some info here too, but not direct comparisons:

Thank you to all that replied here.

What is the optimum RAM configuration for the Quad and Octo-Core machines?

[Pls forgive me if this has been answered before].

    Thanks,

    Wayne

4GB Minimum. I have read some reports of 8GB or more causing issues in some apps, but honestly don’t know which.

I’m about to order a 8 core with 10 GB of RAM.
My reseller was going to get me 16GB, but I figured that was way overkill, so I went down to 10.
Should I knock that down to 8?

I assume that FCS (especially motion and compressor) run well with 8 GBs?

Walter, how much do you have on your beefiest system?
