OT: Feasting on Asphalt…Walter?
A quick round of kudos to Walter this morning on the series “Feasting on Asphalt” on the Food Network. I recorded the entire series a week or two ago when it ran into the wee hours of the morning on Food Network. I finally got the pleasure of watching a couple of shows last night. Simply brilliant! What a great idea. Quirky and fun. I believe that Alton Brown is probably the best ad lib standup talent on broadcast TV today. Point the camera at him and just let him go. His standups while driving his motorcycle are nothing short of amazing. The rest of the show is just a pleasure to watch. I love the make-it-up-as-we-go approach to reporting. And the roll-up map device is an instant classic.
As for the losgistics of doing this show on the road? What a challenge. As a former PM Magazine photographer (anyone remember PM Magazine!?) what I could have done back then with today’s camera technology. I remember hanging, upside down, from the straps of a 2-place Pitts Special aerobatic airplane while shouldering a state-of-the-art (at that time) RCA TK-76B camera with safety cables attached to the airplane frame just in case I lost my grip on the camera. Trying to shoot while wearing goggles (since the cockpit was open to the air) with a Sony BVU0-110 U-matic deck safely strapped between my legs to avoid it interfearing with the second control stick in the front cockpit. It’s amazing what we actually managed to do back then without killing ourselves! Gyro errors be damned!
Anyhow, I just wanted to give credit to those who worked on the series. Great job, guys! I’m assuming that the same people that work on “Good Eats” worked on this show as well? Yes? There aren’t credits on the end of the shows to check this assumption.
If you haven’t seen the series, check it out if it’s played again. It’s worth it.
