    Hello All,

This is an off topic hardware problem, but I figured you are all Macintosh folk so maybe someone can lead me in the right direction:

I was merrily editing along on my Dual 2.7GHz G5, actually playing the FCP timeline, when all of my monitors went blank and my UPS warning beeper sounded, once. Nothing shut down, but the screens went blank for a moment and then just showed a black raster.

The power light on the front of the G5 was lit. Strange, I thought. Moments later I hear the startup chimes and the computer monitor lit up and went through the usual startup procedure. Phew….. I thought. But why did it shut down when the UPS had kept everything else going?

Once started up, I saved my current project to a flash drive and then opened it (from the internal drive as usual). Everything was there right up to the last save I had made, which was current.

I noticed that several volumes, one an internal RAID and one, a single disk connected via eSATA, did not mount. Three other volumes did mount. I shut the computer down for a few minutes and then attempted to restart. I heard the power relays click and the light on the front of the G5 came on, but nothing else happened. I held the power button down but it does not go off. No fan spins, no drive spins, nada. When I unplug the machine I hear the relays click. When I plug it back in they click and the light immediately comes on without me pressing the on button.

I have unplugged everything except my keyboard, even the power cables to any internal drives other than the boot drive. Same scenario.

So, I’m wondering if anyone has had something like this happen. Power supply? Logic board? Boat anchor?

Thanks for reading and for any guidance anyone can offer.

    Regards,
    David

There’s a button on the logic board, I forget what it’s called. You just push it and that should fix your problem.

I think that button is called the PMU or Power Management Unit. It should be in the manual for your G5.

Thank you Sean and Arnie, that indeed resolved the problem! It is called the PMU reset button, and in case anyone finds this thread trying to resolve such an issue, here’s the Apple instruction page for resetting it:

What a terrific resource the COW is. Again, many thanks to you both, and now, back to work!

    Best,
    David
