  • OT: dead DVD drive in G5… replacement

It appears our DVD drive (Pioneer DVR-106D) in our original G5 Dual 2.0 (the first one) has developed problems. Has anyone replaced one… is their an Pioneer model (that’s available) that will work? Any suggestions would be appreciated…

I used a Pioneer DVD-R replacement drive in my G4-733 Quicksilver and it worked great… I believe Pioneer is a great replacement choice.

Also I have a Lacie Desktop DVD+-RW connected via firewire to my iMac running 10.4.8, and it works seamless with what I’ve done. Blank discs appear in the finder, and DVDSP and Toast both see it as a option when burning discs.

Though any specifics to your machine, I do not know.

My dp 2ghz with the 3 pci-x slots just blew the DVR-107 and I replaced it with a DVR-111. It has a wider end on the front tray though and the top of the tray hit the case of the g5. I took the 2 feet off the bottom of the drive so it sloped down in front and it cleared the opening in the case. When you slide the burner in it now only has the 2 back feet to locl into the lever locks that hold it in place. I put a 1x1x1 inch piece of high density foam on top to support it at the front end for when I move the computer around and it’s been working excellent. It’s a great burner. I also put one in my g4 and it has the same front on ther tray as the old DVR-104 so it bolted right in. Got it at NCIX for 39.99 CNC. http://www.ncix.com

They are easy to replace. Just go buy (Online $50.00) the newest/fastest/Pioneer DVR-106 or 107 or 108 or whatever and it’ll slide right in.

Whe were running a 107D and just upgraded to the 111D and have had no problems at all. We updated the firmware to 1.29 before installing the G5. We are also running a 111D in an external FW case. We bought (2) of the raw 111D drives for $85 shipped.

We are thinking of replacing the 107D drives in our 5:1 duplicator with the 111D drives as well but need to check out the hardware firmware capability 1st.

The latest and greatest is the DVR-111, it is getting better reviews than the 110 although it is not quite as fast and there is the tray issue. It’s dual layer which is a step up from the earlier models.
