OT. Broadcast consolidation continues.
Just heard from a source inside one of our few remaining locally originating TV stations that there’s more consolidation happening in our local TV universe.
Pretty recently, the CBS affiliate Channel 5 “bought and absorbed” the longtime “independent” TV station Channel 3 in Phoenix (one of the top 10 ADI Neilson zones in the US)
Once upon a time 3 was the ABC affiliate – but that eded a couple of decades ago in a huge channel swap where the ABC badge went to channel 15 – and 3 became a local powerhouse as an indy.
Now it appears that a much bigger conglomerate – Media General – has bought out Meredith Broadcasting.
So again the broadcast world loses diversity and fewer and fewer companies control more and more information sources. There were already significant layoffs when 5 and 3 merged – I only hope that they don’t just gut the whole local operation and “take a feed” from somewhere out of state.
The TV industry sure has changed.
