OT-Blu-Ray authoring and consumer machines
Posted by Warren Eig on February 19, 2008 at 4:46 pmSorry for the off topic but Blu-Ray authoring has been discussed here earlier. I know some of you are already authoring. I just did my first one.
My question is what consumer Blu-Ray players are people using to preview the burned discs– both BD-R (write once) and BD-RE (rewritable). Which players are compatible?
TIA,
Warren

February 19, 2008 at 4:53 pmHi Warren,
Just wandering if your process was the same as Walter’s; i.e. using Encore and Toast?

February 19, 2008 at 5:57 pmTHanks for the reply Warren. I’ve been thinking of doing the same setup, but now that the format war is over, I don’t see how we’re not going to get an upgrade to DVDSP to include BR support. I’ve only worked on one project where this could have come in handy, and don’t expect any other projects in the near future to need this, so I think I’m going to wait for the update/upgrade.
Having said that, if something does come up and I can’t wait for DVDSP, did you find the process pretty painless, or at least not too time consuming?

February 19, 2008 at 6:27 pmAll machines should now be compatible if you have run the latest updates. I have a link to a central site for all machines in my blog.
We have the Sony BDP-S1 which did not play computer burned discs when I purchased it, but now it does with firmware updates we downloaded a few months ago.

February 19, 2008 at 7:31 pmThe process was fairly painless. I find Adobe Encore a bit awkward. DVDSP seems more user friendly and elegant.

No clue honestly. We’ve shipped about 200 BluRay discs so far and no one has come back to say they can’t play it.

One last question. Does this player play back the BD-RE (rewritable disc) so one can preview a disc before committing it to a BD-R (write once disc)?

Yes, this is a MUST if you are authoring discs. We have two BD-RE discs for testing. Too expensive to waste $17 – $25 discs only to find out they don’t work.
and in case it’s your next question, I purchase my discs from TapeOnline.com. Actually I purchase all my media stock from them for about three years now.
