OT: Best source for white foam backed screen

I’m actually not going back to the store for a couple of days (I think). And my plan is to look for something thick and sturdy, so I can turn on a heel or a toe without worrying about tearing it.

If you ask me, if you want to shoot green, put up a green screen. EEFX makes a dandy green foam-backed screen (nothing else like it). You can also get the foam-backed cloth from other manufacturers (and even on EBay); but at the end of the day, if you shoot on green you will have a green halo to eliminate (not news to you, I am sure), and if you shoot on white you will have a white halo to deal with.

I am told that the advantage of using white is if you want to have a white background, then removing the halo is not an issue, and so one needs to spend less time removing the halo. However, I am not an expert. I hope Eric Franks will clue us in on how to key out the white halo, and bring in the blue background, like on his Star Trek tutorial.

If you ask me, I personally would not trust gels to turn the white into green. If I wanted to use green I would put up green; but you may be much more expert in that than I am.

The EEFX screens are simply pre-sewn Veltex (white being Veltex 819, chroma green being Veltex 842). Raw Veltex, such as linked above, is 60″ wide, available by the yard, and as many as you want can be sewn together (as eefx does).

I’ve been waiting 5 weeks now for an EEFX green screen for TTL prompter use and, indeed, communication is poor, and lead times are long. With a critical shoot now approaching fast, I wish I would have ordered from tylers and sewn my own.

The Veltex product is, essentially, Velcro, and made by them, I think? Because of the rough, soft texture, it absorbs light instead of reflecting it, thus less spill and great color saturation.

I haven’t used the white Veltex (only green), but I imagine it is just fine. However, color saturation is not a huge issue with white, and perhaps the little bit of spill would merely act as fill vs. softening the edges too much?

It’s the only way I would go for a traditional green screen, though.

They’ve got a half off sale on white poly fleece. For eighty bucks we can have a 12′ x 20′ screen to pin over the top of our canvas (for support). A little more work than foam, but since we already have the canvas….

To my surprise they also made a chroma green and blue fleece….
