Activity Forums Apple Final Cut Pro Legacy OT: Apple pulls out of NAB

[Aaron Neitz] “Your retail store employees don’t know 1/100 of what I would ask them to show me. “

I’ve actually been impressed with some of the Apple Genius Bar folks on other Pro Apps (albeit not FCP).

[Craig Seeman] “So Blu-Ray support in DVDStudio Pro isn’t going to be a big announcement? There’s at least 10 or 15 of us waiting for that worldwide. “

A helluva a lot more than that. This is the single biggest source of embarrassment to Apple… talk about asleep at the switch…

[Michael Horton] ” The way I’m spinning this decision is if you really want to talk to the folks from the FCS team and I mean the ones that really matter; the ones that make decisions on your behalf, then you’ll find them April 16. They will be right up on stage and after that out in the hall. Try finding them on the show floor at their giant booth at a giant trade show like NAB. Yes, they are there, but just try and find them. “

Michael, I understand (and respect) your thoughts, but the truth is that at the SuperMeet those guys can’t discuss anything in the future at all, so they usually can’t answer any questions. Everyone wonders where the hell Blue-Ray support is… those guys won’t be able to comment. As for influencing them… we’ve had the same wish list for at least 3 years, and we’re still waiting for much of it… better media mgt, an actual real database in FCP, etc.

Apple gets to do what they want. This isn’t about money, they have more cash than Toyota at this point. I’m not sure what it’s about, but I think they missed a huge opportunity. This raises serious questions (and concerns) about the importance (and future) of the pro apps. It also diminishes the importance (in Apple’s eyes) of FCP server.

We can spin this anyway we want, but this didn’t help anything… it only hurt…

There is a heavy price to pay for marketing like you suggested: 50 dog-and-pony shows in 50 markets can cost a lot more than one huge show that lasts 5 days at NAB. And you need either 50 well trained, slick pro tech/markting teams in 50 places, or one slick team working on it permanently…

Every three years I travel from South Africa to NAB – 24 hrs door to door – quite a trip – to make buying decisions. I have a list of areas to investigate – speak to the clever people. And this is the one place where I knew I would find them.

This year my ticket is booked. Within a year I have to recommend purchasing decisions on a HD multicam studio with video, audio, control, lighting, direct to disk recording, media servers, SAN and multiple edit suites in a broadcast environment. Final Cut Server was high on my agenda. Now it isn’t.

I will certainly not be helped by my local apple store… You see, there is a huge difference between reading about it on the internet (as I do) and seeing it in action – speaking to the people like Walter that has the knowledge to answer my questions.

Apple and Avid’s absence certainly hurts their chances for my business. And that’s a serious hit. There are many alternatives out there, at NAB.

    Sad day. Very sad.

Avid lost my business 8 years ago. I had 3 Avids, now I have 10 FCP’s. Maybe I’ll have 20 Premiere systems in three years, with Ramoha Howard’s RaveHD as a central media server??? These items change, perceptions and market conditions change –

Apple must not take a rest in a comfort zone with FCS or they will lose their good name quickly. EG:
    – Blu-ray won the race. HD movies need to be authored in Blu-ray. This is URGENT!
    – QT 7.4 that breaks pro apps. No relief in sight. That shows serious disrespect to their own pro-community.

    C’mon Apple – don’t drop the ball!

    Regards
    Francois

You cant get answers on future products on the trade show floor either. Thats policy. What you can do is bitch and moan about the stuff you want to the people who really matter and have more power than that temp guy at the booth who’s been hired away for a week from the Apple Store in Dayton.

Plus you get to eat crappy food and hang with Jerry Hofmann.

[walter biscardi] “The most insane statement from Apple is that we can go to the Retail Stores to learn more about the products. If Apple wants to hire video and audio professionals to start staffing their stores, this could work. If Apple expects their standard retail employees to sell me on Final Cut Studio 2, that’s unrealistic and it’s not fair to those employees. “

well said Walter… that statement is ludicrous. If I had a nickel for everytime I overheard someone at an Apple store giving out incorrect info on FCP, etc. I could retire. We had a post house here in town get told totally wrong info when buying a whole FCP system, that they considered suing the store, since the 3rd party editing hardware that was recommended wouldn’t work together with the machine they bought there. Children and chainsaws…

Yesterday, I had to listen to some twenty year old guy tell me why no one needs and iPhone case with a belt clip. I didn’t want to tell him that I’ve been using cell phones longer than he’s been alive…

[Paul Dickin] “a) Final Cut Server – ie FCP’s Media Manager totally fixed and made bomb-proof with an internal asset database, AND fully integrated into a scalable external databased media storage solution, and

    b) Apple Xnas – a state of the art lower end (lower cost) shared storage solution, NAS rather than SAN, that would allow us smaller edit facilities access to a shared storage solution that we can afford, and manage without expensive specialist support.

    c) Also QuickTime needs to be updated to fully cope with clip management and databasing in a MXF-metadata world. I guess this is part of the problem in getting FCServer to market, as the preservation of metadata is crucial to server management of assets. Timecode was a tape-based solution which is inadequate in a tapeless workflow – I mean VITC hasn’t even made it into QuickTime, we’re all working in Tape Counter mode 😉

    d) Lastly DVD SP brought into the Blu-ray era, but fully, with control over the whole navigation interactivity of the new format. And with the DRM nonsense reworked to be of benefit to a small corporate edit facility, not just for Hollywood production studios. “

    nice list…

Actually I avoid those types… and talk to established contacts there.

[Michael Horton] “Plus you get to eat crappy food and hang with Jerry Hofmann. “

Actually, it’s to see if I could ever keep up with you in the after show drinking dept… seeing Gary scream and bang on the microphone, watching the original reality show… you making people act outrageous to win something. I really think you should get credit for creating that genre…

Then of course, there is Frank’s take on this. If this turns out to be true, Apple will once again shake up the industry…just not in the same way 🙂

50 dog and ponies with say, 2 guys and a mac will cost no where near the millions spent at NAB…. and likely could reach as many or more people… that is what apple is looking at…

They could hold all day or two day shows in Apple stores… hey, it could work.

Anyone that thinks Apple is going to sell the Pro Apps doesn’t understand the dynamics involved here. Apple’s Pro apps sell Macs. Lots of Macs. The high end of the line would suffer greatly if there wasn’t FCS… get real. We’re all replacing our machines every 3 years or so to keep up with the Pro Apps develeopment. That is a LOT of Macs per year. Minimum 300,000 towers for starters.
