  OSX/10GbE console message repeated: setLinkStatus – not active

  This is basically a question, but maybe sort of a tip as well:

  We noticed the inactive port on an ATTO NS12 10GbE fiber card was generating this message in the system.log (OSX 10.8) every second or so until we disabled it entirely in System Prefs;

  [unintelligible] setLinkStatus – not active [useless hex ID]

  The good news is that after highlighting port2 (which showed Unplugged/red light as status) and hitting the “-” button at the bottom of the list, the console messages stopped.

  I actually had a significant problem resulting from this once before: after a few months of several log messages per second (with a SmallTree card), a 40GB (yes, Gigabyte) log file consumed all the available space on an xServe hd and caused it to hang. It took some time to figure that one out.

  So out of curiosity… anyone know a. what this is, and b. why it would vary machine-to-machine? (only one of our mac pros is doing it…the others have inactive ports an no console messages)

  In the meantime, I’ll be completely disabling any unused 10GbE ports in OSX just to be safe
