    Hello,
I was wondering if anyone has ever tried to recreate the magnification effect from the Mac OS icon dock, how the icons grow in size as your cursor rolls along them. I’ve been fiddling with it for a few hours and it has been a long painstaking process of resizing and adjusting positioning, and it still doesn’t look quite right. Is there a quicker way to do this kind of effect? I’ve tried precomposing and using the magnification effect but that isn’t working either. Thanks to anyone who might have some advice!

You shouldn’t have to adjust position. Set the Anchor Point to the bottom of your footage. When you scale it will grow from the anchor point.

JJ Gifford is your friend. From his page(scroll down):

    Example: Scale
In the second comp, we’ve applied the same basic expression to each layer’s scale parameter, to create an effect similar to the dynamic scaling seen in the Applications Dock in Apple’s MacOS X.

Like Ian said, move the anchor point to where you want it to scale from, at the bottom it will scale up.

Use the Distort effects – bulge or one of similar ilk. Additionally Boris has more sophisticated Bulge and Distortion Effects in BCC if you have access.

Thanks for everyone’s help. I tried a few more methods and Colin’s expression is what I went with, it worked great for the magnification end of it, exactly like the dock. As far as the shifting around of icons, I just manually tweaked it here and there until it looked about right. Thanks again!

I am terribly sorry to revive this old thread.

But these expressions make no sense to me. I don’t know where to apply each parameter because it doesn’t list where we’re supposed to put em.

Can anyone provided an updated expression? Bulge isn’t what I’m looking for, or at least, can someone put this into layman’s terms?
