OSX -10.7.5 Memory gets gobbled up – Startup disk has no room for applications….
Hi I have an iMac which is suddenly running very very slow. The reason is that almost all RAM memory is used (Total 8 GB) even when nothing is running and virtual memory is being used.
Of the 8 GB only 10 MB is free according to activity monitor.
I have tried a complete power down (disconnected from line power) to reset as well as “sudo purge” from terminal. Both have a positive effect clearing memory but only for a few seconds and the I am back with the same situation of only about 10 MB free and crazy hard drive virtual memory accesses.
The error “your mac start up disk has no more room for applications” comes every few seconds although there is 300 GB available.
Another problem is it has difficulty to find/ or does not find attached drives after a restart.
The external backup drive is found but the whole system is too slow to do a recovery.
Does anyone have a solution?
Many thanks
Peter
