I started a project in FCP 5 on a Macbook Pro, shot on a Canon 5D Mark II. I’ve edited on that machine for a few weeks, having no issues. I just got a brand new Mac Pro and the whole FCS. I’m very excited, but then when I try to open this project, it opens, but then the timeline stutters and chokes and generally my brand new multi thousand dollar computer is acting like a $300 netbook. What settings/preferences am I missing or have overlooked. I’ve been using Final Cut fairly extensively for 1.5 years now, I’m not a total noob, but I do occasionally have major brain farts. Anyone’s help is greatly appreciated.

FCP 6 has many new and improved features than FCP 5. 5D shoots in a file format that no version of FCP
can handle natively. FCP 6 introduced us to ProRes 422. My suggestion is to start your project over in FCP 6 and use ProRes 422 sequence.

No matter what project you are working on, it has never been recommended to switch FCP versions mid project.

Absolutely, and now that I am going through this whole thing, I couldn’t agree more. I still have the old version saved on the Macbook Pro, but I was so excited to use the new tower, that I couldn’t wait. For some reason, it’s actually working fine now, I rendered the whole sequence, and it is good. Thank you for your response, I always appreciate the advice from experts in the field.
