Pretty 100% positive its just black ink poured into a fish tank or something, and filmed. Then use the video in AE.

    Sup Joshua,

Jon is right about the stuff flowing out from the action. That was ink dropped in a fish tank against a white background.

The reveal of the images wasn’t done that way though. I printed the images on transparency, and before they could dry, dissolved the ink away by pouring rubbing alcohol on it while shooting it on video. Reversed the footage.

It’s a messy process, but get’s cool results.

One other question Ted. Did you shoot the ink and transparencies on just basic dv or was it film?

I would have preffered to shoot it higher quality, but dv was all I had access to for the project. It was shot on a dvx100.

    Thanks for the compliments.

I must admit Im a mograph(the pink) lurker ….so thats how I knew the ink thing. Anyways, like Josh said……really awesome piece Ted. Along with your others. Especially your newest USVI St. Croix piece. The organic growing plants in that are just awesome. Great work!

Man, Ted. That is a gorgeous piece. The music, the mood, the execution. Just beautiful.

    Hey Ted,
really inspiring work, thanks for sharing.
About a subtle feature behind/entwined in your iconic imagery, I’ve noticed this “sprouting-vines” aesthetic (for lack of a better term) gaining popularity lately, unfortunately I’m still a novice w/ the Adobe package and clawing away at the “work smarter, not harder” philosophy…but this time I’m beat. Short of having a ridiculous number of masks reveal these ornate, complex patterns in symmetrical fashion, what is the most efficient way to do this?
    Thanks for any advice,
    brian

Thanks Chris, u know it was just one of those things. I had the general idea goin in, no time, and after several long nights, this appeared. Really didn’t expect it to be all that great, but alas…

    Thanks for kind words.

    unfortunately, that’s how I did it…

There are other methods, u can use vector paint, set to animate strokes, and used as a matte. I do that quite often. U can also trace out your reveal path with a spline, and use the stroke plugin on it, and then use that as a matte.

But I think masking gives you the most control. I know Jayse put up a tutorial about it, u can find it here…

He uses the write on effect, I think. I haven’t watched the tute. Kinda the same thing as using stroke.

    hope this helps

    Ted
