Option A or Option B
Hello Forums People,
I am looking at one of two options for a cross-platform workflow and I would like to get your advice and feedback. My situation is as follows. At home, I work on a MacPro with FCPS2. At the office, I’m on an HP workstation running AVID MC. My “home” work is not the same as my “work” work. However, do to certain circumstances requiring I be home more often, I will now be doing most of my work from home. So, which of the following options would make the most sense?
Option A:
1. Start a project at work on the MC.
2. Export ALEs and QTs to an external drive formatted to be PC/MAC compatible.
3. Use Sebsky Tools to properly bring the files into FCP with accurate timecode, etc.
4. Buy Automatic Duck Import/Export and use that to export OMFs to take back to work to finish a project.Option B:
1. Start a project at work on the MC.
2. Transfer the entire project, bins and all, plus reference movies to an external drive.
3. Buy Avid Xpress Pro and work at home in an Avid environment.
4. Export just the sequence from the home Avid and take that back to the work Avid to finish a project.A few more things to consider. I am trying not to have to re-capture media, as it is not really an option. I just need to be able to use “reference” movies to cut at home and relink to the “true” media back at work. With either option, I will be finishing every project (graphics, effects, etc.) at work, so I’m not worried about any lack of ability of Automatic Duck to properly convert DVEs or other effects coming out of FCP to Avid.
Personally, I am kind of leaning towards Option B, as I get a second NLE out of the deal, which I could eventually upgrade to MC should a job warrant it. Simplicity and stability of workflow is also of paramount concern, and it seems like staying in the Avid world for these projects would allow for that. However, I also like the idea of editing these projects (documentaries, by the way) on FCP, as I feel I could be more efficient in that medium on FCP. So…
Is there something I am not taking into account? Will Option A even work? With Option B, is there anything I am not aware of that would prevent me from doing what I hope to do (i.e., can I transfer over the projects from work without transferring over the “captured” media)? Price isn’t as much an issue as efficiency and stability. Both options will cost about the same and, actually, with my professor discount I can get Xpress Pro for about $500 so it could actually be a less expensive option.
What do you think? All of this is based on research I have done on these forums and on the web, but what do I know? Typically, I know about half as much as half of you on half of these forums half of the time…and usually even less.
Thanks, in advance, for any guidance you can send my way.

p.s.
If I end up going with Option B, should I be putting Xpress Pro on a second boot drive? And, if I do, does that require buying another copy of OSX or do I just clone my FCP system drive and get rid of everything but OSX and start from there? And, would there be any advantage, since work is on PC, to having the second boot drive be BootCamped Windows XP? Thanks…
