  • Optimizing Video for Projection Screen?

Posted by Heringji on August 23, 2006 at 6:59 pm

I just got asked if I was able to optimize video for the web and for projection screen use using Final Cut Pro. The person who asked wants to do this because they said when the dvd video they have is projected on a screen, the color looks bad. I took a look at the video on my computer’s dvd player and the problem I see is that it was poorly lit and the white balance is slightly off. Is this just amplified on the projection screen? Is there really a way to optimize video for projection?

    Thanks!

I usually find that this complaint means they’re watching the video in a room that’s not very dark so the projection looks pretty faded and washed-out.

Use the color corrector to correct the color as best you can, lower the black level (slightly, not too much!) and raise the mid-tones a little bit.

You’ll end up with video that looks WAY to contrast-y and colorful on a TV screen, but should look a little better on their projector.

The trick is to make sure they don’t then go and watch it on a TV because then they’ll be complaining that it looks bad there. Where I work I can go and play the altered version for them in our meeting room and then take it right back. If you’re GIVING them a disc it might not work out that way. Probably best to label the disc as “for projector only” or something like that.

    Thank you, that’s good advice!

I agree with jeff. I make a lot of stuff that is shown at my church, whose projectors are a little old, and not quite bright enough and whose sound system is very low and high heavy, but midrange light. I have to customize the sound for the auditorium viewing as well as the picture.
