    Hi,

I’m new to this forum, and new to AE. Browsing this forum, it promises to be a really helpful resource.

I run 64-bit Vista on a Quad-core Intel Xeon E5430 2.66 GHz with 16GB RAM and an NVIDIA Quadro FX 4800 graphics card.

Which settings in AE (and on the graphics card) would you recommend to optimize the use of my hardware resources?

them main thing is to enable render multiple frames simultaneously in preferences>memory & multiprocessing…. after that it will come down to how you use your system. you might read this section of the manual which will explain all the settings in this preference.

you have plenty of ram for 4 cores, so if you plan on only running ae when using ae (not photoshop, a web browser and itunes) i would try setting the ram available to other apps to 1gb (maybe .5 or the minimum for vista) just for system processes. set the minimum ram per cpu to 2gb and cpus to leave for other apps to 0.

if you want to run other apps too, you’ll need to figure out how much ram they need and leave that for for the other apps. i.e. if you want to run photoshop too, leave 1-2gb more.

i would also disable opengl in preferences>previews. just deselect the option for enable opengl. opengl in ae often causes stability issues, plus it is not compatible with ae’s multiprocessing. so if it is enabled, multiprocessing will be disabled for preview rendering. if you have any trouble with an effect giving an opengl error, make sure that opengl is disabled within the effect (i’ve only heard of a problem once with the cartoon effect, it was just a checkbox in the effect to disable opengl).

Thanks for the input. I’ll give it a try.
