  • Optimal Vegas settings for DVX100A 16:9 electronic squeeze mode

Posted by Russell Robertson on March 24, 2009 at 3:17 pm

    Hello,

I’m looking to use the 16:9 electronic squeeze mode of my DVX100A for an upcoming shoot. This will be the first time using this setting so I’m going to make some tests this week.

What would be the optimal Vegas project setup configuration to use with this type footage?

Does anyone have any experience using the DVX100A electronic squeeze mode? I’m a bit skeptical about any “electronic squeezing”, but perhaps the feature lives up to its billing.

Thanks in advance for any insight.

    Hey Russell,

It sounds like it’s recording the footage with an anamorphic pixel ratio – so it could be that the settings for the footage would be the same as a 4×3 project save the pixel aspect ratio (you could change in the project settings to a 1.2 or 1.33 ratios)

You may also be able to use one of my favorite features of Vegas. The Match Media Settings option:

When you go to File>Properties (or type ALT+Enter) you will see this window. Click on the Match Media Settings button, and then navigate to one of clips from the camera, select it, click open, and Vegas will set up your project to match that clips settings.

But that’s assuming that you’ve captured it correctly, but if you are capturing over firewire, you usually don’t have many options.

I shoot and edit with the 100B in Sony Vegas Pro. I’ve had very professional results the last 2 years! You should definitely check out Barry Greens book “The DVX Handbook”. Also check this post out too. For SD, the results are impressive with the SD. I like framing with 16×9 Squeeze. It saves time in editing with the optional 4×3, then resizing to 16×9.

He won at Sundance shooting with the 100A, he used FCP in Post. I can safely say, you can match similar if not better results with Sony Vegas Pro.

    John, Thomas,

Many thanks for taking the time to put together such detailed responses! I really appreciate it.

John – I’ve been using Vegas since v4 and didn’t realize that it had the Match Media Settings option – that will come in handy not just in DVX Squeeze project I’m working on, but with projects I seem to find with all kinds of strange footage.

Thomas – I’m going to take your suggestions to heart and try this over the weekend – very much enjoyed Requiem film!! I’m going to share it with my father, a navy aircraft carrier veteran. Super Job!!

    Thanks again!
