Optimal Project Settings for Multiple Imports
Posted by Andy Winn on July 13, 2025 at 12:39 pmCreating a wedding rehearsal video and photo montage of couple. Everything from HEIC, Mov, to JPG needs to be in my project. When importing the first clip, I have a prompt that says to match project with initial media clip. Seems like if I import a Jpeg first, then it doesn’t allow me to import the exact mp4 clip as initially imported. What project setting do I need for a 7 minute video involving a variety of clips?

July 13, 2025 at 4:28 pmFor a 7-minute wedding rehearsal montage with a mix of HEICs, JPGs, MOVs, and MP4s, I recommend setting your project manually before importing anything. I usually go with 1920×1080 resolution at 30fps since it’s a solid choice for mixed media and displays well on most screens. When that “match media settings” prompt pops up, I just hit “No” and stick to my own settings to keep everything consistent. For vertical clips or photos, I either crop them to fill the 16:9 frame or use a blurred duplicate in the background to make it look more polished. If I’m using Vegas Pro, I also make sure to check the box that adjusts media to match project settings. And for HEICs or iPhone .MOV files that act up, converting them to JPG or MP4 ahead of time saves a lot of headache. Adding a little zoom to still images (like a Ken Burns effect) and keeping transitions consistent really helps everything feel cohesive.

July 13, 2025 at 7:30 pmWow. This is extremely helpful. I will adjust the entire project settings based on your suggestion. I am using 21.0 and had a follow-up question for you. Based on your response, it seems that you are able to import .HIEC files to your project. I have not been able to do that…the program does not like that and I often receive a prompt that says that it cannot open the file. So, I have had to do a lot of “batch converting” using Tunebro or Handbrake for videos. Am I missing something that would make it easier?

July 13, 2025 at 7:40 pmOkay, I know I will sound like a “newbie” (and…to be honest…though I have worked with Vegas for years, I only do so when I do a project for fun every 5ish years), is the setting you’re one of the drop-down preset Video tab template option that looks like:
Template: HD 1080-30p (1920×1080, 29.70 fps).
Field Order: None (progressive scan)
Pixel Aspect Ratio: 1.000 (square)
HDR Mode: Off
Frame Rate: 29.970 (NTSC)
Pixel format: 8 bit (full range)
I have never really changed this suggested option, so I would love to know if this is best.
Thank you so much.

July 17, 2025 at 10:08 pmThat is a completely valid question. This looks perfect! Just make sure to click “no” to matching the project settings to the clips you import. That would backtrack what you did with the project settings.

July 17, 2025 at 10:09 pmUnfortunately, I haven’t found a solution better than converting them beforehand. It’s a pain, but Vegas unfortunately has it’s limits with video encoders.
Hope I’ve been helpful.
