Optical flares and AE Camera question
Hi,
Wondering if anyone can help me with an issue I have using Video Copilots optical flares in AE.
I have created a scene with a skyscraper and the camera pans from the bottom of the skyscraper to the top. I have placed a lens flare in one of the top windows and want it to stay in that place but I can’t get the flare to stay in that same place. It seems to move independently of the camera. Any ideas? I’m sure its probably something really stupid I’m doing.

Did you motion track your scene, or is the camera movement the virtual AE camera?

— not 100% sure on this but if using the AE camera think it should be ok if you precompose the flare and the building first — chris —

I think the problem is you need to motion track your footage in order to have the lens flares stay in place.

Did you just place the flare in the scene or is it attached to a light? If it isn’t tracking lights, it’s not going to follow the camera’s movement.

Hi Evan,
Didn’t realise I had to motion track. I thought as long as it was set to a 3d layer it would work like any other object!
Have tried motion tracking since with not great results!

No it wasn’t attached to a light. I did try but found it difficult to place my light where the flare was. I presumed it would just work as other 3d objects do in AE and follow the camera movement.

You created your 3D sky scraper in AE? In OF you can set the source of your flare to be from a light. If you have multiple lights there is a setting to isolate flares to only come from lights with a certain name. Position the light in your 3D scene. You can also set the flare to be obscured by “walls” of your skyscraper. This should yield far better results than any kind of post animation camera tracking.
