The 3 ways I know of to manage events are:

    1. Create .sparseimage Disk images

    2. Create “Not-in-Use” event folders and manually move them in and out via the Finder.

    3. 3rd Party software to manage within FCP X (I can’t think of the name of it at the moment). Personally, I tend to avoid 3rd party software of any kind unless absolutely necessary.

Any thoughts on the advantages and dis-advantages of the 3 methods? I’ve tried 1. and 2. and they both work fine. This could simply be a matter of 6 of one and half a dozen of the other, but I thought I’d ask before I make a major commitment to one method and re-work my older footage on external drives.

    Thanks,
    Dave

Event Manager X is pretty solid. And don’t be afraid of “3rd party software.” You’d have a really tough time getting anything done on a computer without some form of it… 🙂

    1) sparseimages make me nervous for some reason.

    2) Yes, Finder works great here.

    3) Event Manger X is (in my opinion) the best “3rd party solution” that FCPX has right now and it’s 5 bucks. All it does is move folders around (and close and launch FCPX for you at the push of a button), much less risky than a disk image.

    4) If using a SAN environment, you can add different SAN locations for different projects. Meaning, you can place Events and Projects anywhere on the system, at whatever level, not just at the root level, then simply add and remove whatever you need.

    Jeremy,

[Jeremy Garchow] “2) Yes, Finder works great here.”

Do I understand correctly then that you are using the manual Finder method in your work?

I don’t have clients or employees or a need for a SAN, so it would likely work fine for me too. It’s easy enough for me to do the moves myself before I open FCP X as part of my workflow.

I’ve not heard of anyone ever having any issues with disk images, but I suppose it is another layer of complication that wouldn’t be necessary for my situation.

    Thanks,
    Dave

When using FCPX on only one machine, I used Event Manager X. Super easy and much easier than using Finder.

Event manager X doesn’t work with Events/Projects that aren’t in the root level (SAN Locations).

So now I use a combo of SAN Locations and finder, and waiting to see if Event Manager X will become more SAN capable. If and when it does, I’ll use that.

Very cool, I’ll take a look. You can’t beat the price.

    Thanks again,
