So here’s my situation. I’m still using FCP 6 with FCS2 on a 3 year old Macpro Octocore tower. I didn’t upgrade to 7 because I simply didn’t have a need for any of the new features and hadn’t upgraded to Snow Leopard either which I have since done. Video production and editing comprise only about 50% of my business right now with the rest being split between Mograph, Photography and Audio Production. I have some steady clients that require me to be able to open old projects for updating so moving to FCPX is not an option for me right now. I also need true video output to my video monitor. Is there a reason I should try and find a copy of 7 or should I just stick with what works? Any other considerations I should be thinking of? All input is most appreciated.

    Mick,
I’m in the same boat, except I went to SL.
Is your system stable? Does it do what you need? If the answers are yes and yes, run what you have.
I do understand wanting to have FCS3. I would like to have a copy ‘in case of’, but I probably wouldn’t install it without reason, since my system is pretty solid.
As far as the whole X boondoggle, I’m waiting to try Lightworks for Mac. And I use Motion a lot too, so it might be time to have a look at CS5. I don’t see much of a future in Final Cut, as I did six months ago.

I have a system, it has stuff in it, and stuff hooked to it. I have a camera, it can record stuff. I read the manuals, and know how to use this stuff and lots of other stuff too.
    You should be suitably impressed…

Yes you should. Fcp7 will work in lion.
If you cant buy one, ‘borrow’ a serial.
    Thats what Apple wouldve wanted:p
As you know, they care for their pro license holders.

I think that whenever people put in a bogus but working serial into FCP 7, we should register it to steve jobs.

So what you’re saying is find a friend with a copy and use his/her serial #

Don’t know what “SL” is but yes the system is very stable and it does what I need. I’m spending the day today organizing my raid to offload a ton of old projects and then moving everything that’s mistakenly accumulated on the system drive over to it so I can make a bootable carbon copy of the system drive. I have one right now but would like a cleaner more compact version.

Won’t FCP 6 work in Lion?

But Mick, if you do that, won’t the Apple FCP7 support staff be furious about….

    …oh……. right……

If a program is registered in limbo and nobody is there to hear it, does that still make it a crime?

[Chris Babbitt] ” Won’t FCP 6 work in Lion?”

I wouldn’t trust that to be the case. Even the latest SL update upset many FCS3 users. My system is now frozen in OS and version. It works.

The reason to find a version of FCS3 is that programs like Color finally worked in that version. Color is an amazingly good grading program. The version in FCS2 had lots of problems.

The final straw will be the extra support that came with FCS3 for newer cameras and codecs. The Canon EOS plugin is designed for FCS3. Gradually FCS3 users will become frustrated by lack of new camera support but at least we are two years ahead of FCS2 users.

If in your shop you shoot and edit with a camera that will serve you for a while and it works with FCS2, then stick with it until commercial pressure forces you to look for a new combo.
