Just wondered if andy of you had an opinion about the performance boost I could expect in Premier Pro and After Effects moving from my current 8 core Mac Pro from 2007 (3ghz and 20GB RAM) to a maxed out iMac i7 with 32GB RAM and NVIDEA 680?

I’ve found the MacPro rock solid over the years but I can’t upgrade the graphics card to a CUDA capable model as the motherboard in the 2007 models only has a 32bit EFI – and I’m finding this is hurting me now in Premier Pro.

I also do a lot of work in AFX and wondered if the iMac would be much faster when rendering?

I’ve considered waiting for the new Mac Pros but it could be many months yet and I guess I would need to spend double what the iMac will cost.

    Any thoughts out there?

The newer iMacs will be much faster.
A new MacPro Desktop would be better.
    Over 2007 model.

New MacPro would be faster than the iMac but I don’t really want to wait for the 2013 model and I’m not buying something that’s already obsolete for a lot more than the iMac – I guess I’m leaning towards the iMac but can’t find any definitive info about how much faster it will be for Adobe pro apps than my MacPro – nearest I can find is the new iMacs are about the same as a 6 core 2010 MacPro. Which would make it a bit faster than my machine but how much – twice, three times, even more?

I know the iMac with an Nvidia will be great for the CUDA stuff in Premiere but I’m just as interested in rendering in Media Encoder and AFX.

The new macpro that’s not out yet is obsolete?

From my experience, I went from a 2006/2007 MacPro using APP to a 2011 iMac and difference was nite and day. Much better. But I find the iMac underwhelming when in the midst of a heavy edit.

I hope that helps in your decision.

    Thanks Chris

I meant the current MacPro is obsolete (although fast with 12 cores) four year old architecture and 2 year old CPUs for a big premium over an iMac.

I’m thinking the 2012 iMac will feel plenty fast enough for me for a few years so I think I’ll get the iMac keep it for maybe 3 years and then go Mac Pro again – then using the iMac as a general purpose office machine.

    Thanks Tom

Interesting – seems Walter is happy with his iMacs for most of the work. I guess computers in general are starting to catch up with demands of heavy users like video pros, in a few years you’ll be able to edit multiple streams of 4K on a Macbook Air!

For his facility it does seem to be the case.

For my needs, Im glad I purchased the HP Z820 fully loaded.
