  • Opening Title Sequence – Float Video through a primary frame

Posted by William Mcqueen on May 8, 2010 at 1:13 pm

Although I’m able to undertake creative documentary editing, currently using CS3, I will try to ask my question. (Recently bought CS4 Master, but want to finish a current project before installing to WIN7.)

I want to create an opening title sequence for a video of “talking heads”. Actually, these are very capable, engaging and interesting storytellers and there is no available B-roll.I was impressed at how they held your attention so well.

The suggestion has been made for an opening title sequence which would use scaled down frame sizes, take a few seconds of the video of each story-teller and slowly float these reduced frame sizes through the opening title sequence before starting with the first storyteller full frame.

I don’t have access to Adobe After effects in any version, until I install CS4 version(and then I’ll have to approach a steep learning curve.)

Is there any possible approach to accomplishing this in CS3?

Your collective wisdom and insight gratefully appreciated.

    Thanks so much,

If you’re just asking if you can scale down the talking heads and place them in front of the opening video then yes you can, you could also add movement of these clips as well very easily.

Just place your clip on the timeline and select it.
Then click the “effects” Tab (next to the source monior tab) and click “Motion”. That will give you a Scale option as well as Position and Opacity options.

Scale the Talking Head video to what you’d like and you can even Keyframe the position to move where ever you’d like.

Now if you’re meaning something completely different like just masking out a floating head or something then let me know, I’m still not quite sure what you mean by “floating”.

    Let me know;)

Just as an experiment, I loaded a still, scaled it, beveled the edges, and played lighting effects. Everything is keyframeable.

The only limitations will be your taste and judgment.

    Hi Danny and Alan,and thanks,

What I would like to do is to have these smaller, reduced frames with video of these folks talking (there are 6 persons), “fly in at an angle and across” SLOWLY and out of frame, leading to the title card and shortly before settling on the person who introduces the storytellers.

Can those smaller frames with moving video of the storytellers talking be beveled like with the still frames?

    Thanks very much.

Yes, they indeed can be beveled. In Video Effects > Perspective > Bevel Edges you get that, with an adjustable (and keyframeable) lighting effect. Also in Perspective is “Basic 3D”, which gives you tilt, swivel, an optional specular highlight, and an adjustable distance to camera. Combine that with motion on the X axis in the Motion tab and you ought to be able to get what you’re after.

Experiment with it a bit to see what looks like a good fit. Shouldn’t really take terribly long to find something that feels right.

    Danny, you said

    >Just place your clip on the timeline and select it.
    >Then click the “effects” Tab (next to the source monitor tab) and >click “Motion”. That will give you a Scale option as well as >Position and Opacity options.

    >Scale the Talking Head video to what you’d like and you can even >Keyframe the position to move where ever you’d like.

I’m wondering if you could give an example of how to describe the path of the image through the frame in the motion section of the effects tab.

Also, I’m wondering about the position of each small video in the timelines. If I were to have a background image in Video 1 TL and were to place the “motion” video in Video 2, wouldn’t Video 2 cover over the background image in Video 1 TL?

Since the images are “decorative” in a certain sense, I’m wondering how long to run them. Seems to me 3 secs would be minimum. I guess it is a matter of taste.

    Cheers,
